Thailand’s box office is heating up as the new year begins,with horror leading the charge alongside a strong showing from local thrillers. The recently released “Ging Gaew” topped the charts this past weekend, earning approximately $300,000 USD and signaling a strong start for the film and a welcome return for actress Thray charoenpura [[1]]. Data compiled from Major Cineplex and ThailandBoxoffice indicates continued success for several titles as Febuary approaches, a traditionally slower month for theatrical releases.

Thai Horror “Ging Gaew” Scares Up $300K Opening Weekend; “Pnak 2” and “Khang Ban” Continue to Thrill

As January comes to a close and February—the month of romance—begins, Thai cinemas are offering a wealth of new entertainment options. However, several existing titles are still proving popular with audiences.

Leading the charge is the chilling new horror film “Ging Gaew,” marking a return to the screen for actress Thray Charoenpura. Also performing well are the new employee thriller “Pnakawan (Open for Consideration)” and the continuing success of the popular horror film “Khang Ban-Pnak 2.”

Recent box office reports from across Thailand, covering data from Major Cineplex theaters nationwide and estimates from other cinemas throughout the country via ThailandBoxoffice, show “Ging Gaew” debuted at number one with a weekend gross of 12.02 million baht (approximately $300,000 USD). “Pnak 2” followed in second place with a total gross of 31.29 million baht. “Pnakawan (Open for Consideration)” opened at number three with 3.48 million baht, and “Khang Ban” landed at number five, having earned 126.44 million baht to date.
