Florida Woman Sentenced in Shooting Death Sparking Debate Over ‘Stand Your Ground’ Laws

A Florida woman was sentenced to 25 years in jail yesterday for the 2023 shooting death of Ajike Owens, a case that ignited a national conversation about “Stand Your Ground” laws and racial bias in the justice system.

On June 2, 2023, 35-year-old Ajike Owens, a mother of four, went to the home of 58-year-old Susan Lorincz in Ocala, Florida, to discuss an incident involving her son and Lorincz. Owens’ son had reported that Lorincz had shouted at and thrown objects at his younger brother for playing on a shared grassy area. Lorincz shot Owens through her closed front door, leaving her to die in the street. Lorincz later told investigating officers, “I don’t even actually remember picking up the gun… I just remember shooting.”

The case drew widespread attention after a documentary, “The Perfect Neighbour,” directed by Geeta Gandbhir, was released, featuring police bodycam footage and interviews with Owens’ family. The film highlighted a pattern of Lorincz calling 911 to report Owens’ children for minor offenses and raised concerns about the police response to those calls. Owens’ mother, Pam Dias, stated, “I wanted the world to see what Stand Your Ground laws can do. What guns in the wrong hands can do. What racial violence looks like.” Research from the Brennan Center for Justice indicates that homicides involving white aggressors and Black victims are five times more likely to be ruled justifiable.

A judge ruled that Lorincz was motivated by anger rather than fear when she fired the weapon, stating she was “safe” at the time of the shooting. The sentencing comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, enacted in 2005, and its potential for disproportionate application. Dias has since launched the Standing in the Gap Fund to support families impacted by racial violence. Officials stated they will continue to evaluate the impact of similar laws and work towards ensuring equitable justice for all citizens.
