Timothée Chalamet Delivers a “Dazzling” Performance in ‘Marty Supreme’
Timothée Chalamet is earning rave reviews for his portrayal of a fiercely ambitious table tennis player in “Marty Supreme,” a film already generating Oscar buzz. The actor’s performance has been described as “zestful” and “dazzling,” with some predicting it could earn him his first Academy Award at age 30.
The film, loosely based on the life of American table tennis legend Marty Reisman, follows Marty Mauser, a shoe salesman determined to reach the top of the sport and put American table tennis on the map. According to reports, Mauser is a more extreme version of Reisman, known for his flamboyant personality and clashes with the U.S. Table Tennis Association.
“Chalamet does the impossible,” film journalist Lieven Van Gils wrote, adding that despite his character being “a bit of a jerk,” audiences will locate themselves rooting for him. “Chalamet plays it all with so much flair and panache that you forgive him everything.”
“Marty Supreme” explores the lengths Mauser will go to in order to fund his journey to the World Championship in Japan. The film has been praised for its humor and willingness to push boundaries, with some viewers questioning whether they should even be laughing at certain moments. The film’s release comes as the Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, are pursuing separate directorial projects after two decades of collaboration.
Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” follows Benny Safdie’s “Smashing Machine,” released in October 2025, marking a shift for the filmmaking duo who previously worked together on five feature films. Both films share a common theme: characters driven by competition and a relentless pursuit of survival.
Critics note that the film isn’t a typical inspirational sports biography. Instead, it offers a more complex and unconventional look at ambition and the American Dream. The announcement adds to a year of major film releases and continues to solidify Chalamet’s position as a leading actor in Hollywood.
“Marty Supreme” was released on February 3, 2026 and is currently playing in theaters.
