Tom Cruise Receives Honorary Oscar, Expresses Deep Gratitude: “Making Movies Isn’t Just a Job, It’s Who I Am”
LOS ANGELES – Tom Cruise was visibly moved Thursday, November 16th, as he accepted an Honorary Oscar at the 16th annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles. The legendary actor delivered a heartfelt speech reflecting on his more than 40-year career in the film industry.
The award was presented by Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is currently collaborating with Cruise on a new film slated for release in 2026.
According to Variety, Cruise thanked the “thousands of people” who contribute to bringing a film to life, including behind-the-scenes crews, artists, writers, technicians, and those working in supporting roles. He also expressed his gratitude to filmmakers around the world, stating, “They’re the ones who make the magic happen.”
When asked about his enduring passion for the industry, Cruise explained, “Movies have taken me all over the world, shown me differences, but also what we have in common. No matter where we come from, in a theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together. That’s the power of this art form, and that’s why it’s so important to me… Making movies isn’t just what I do, it’s who I am.”
Cruise recalled falling in love with cinema at a young age. “I’ve loved movies as far back as I can remember,” he said.
He reminisced about being a child in a darkened movie theater, watching a single beam of light transform into a world larger than life. Seeing that beam “ignited my imagination” and made him believe that life could extend beyond the boundaries of his own experience.
“And I’ve been chasing that light ever since,” he shared.
The Governors Awards also honored Debbie Allen, presented by Cynthia Erivo; Wynn Thomas, recognized for his contributions to production design; and Dolly Parton, who received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (via video message due to health reasons). The event is widely considered the unofficial kickoff to awards season.
The ceremony drew a star-studded guest list including Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sydney Sweeney, Dwayne Johnson, Emma Stone, and many others, solidifying its place as a major event on the Hollywood calendar.
