Tom Cruise is set to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in “Top Gun 3,” Paramount confirmed during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026. The announcement, made by Paramount Pictures Co-Chair Josh Greenstein, confirmed that the sequel is “in development with a script underway,” reuniting Cruise with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Whereas a director has not yet been named, Joseph Kosinski, who directed “Top Gun: Maverick,” remains a possibility. “Top Gun: Maverick,” released in 2022, grossed $1.5 billion worldwide and became the fifth-highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. It earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won the Oscar for Best Sound. Cruise first portrayed Maverick in the 1986 original, directed by Tony Scott. His return for the sequel came 36 years later, and the film played a key role in revitalizing theater attendance following pandemic-related closures. Although no additional cast members have been confirmed, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Monica Barbaro—who joined the franchise in “Maverick”—are expected to potentially reprise their roles. Powell previously expressed interest in returning and hinted at knowing when production might begin. Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote “Maverick” with Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer, revealed during a 2025 podcast interview that a story idea for “Top Gun 3” was already in place, based on a pitch by Kruger. “It’s already in the bag,” he said on “Happy Sad Confused.” The film follows Paramount’s renewed focus on the franchise after its 2025 merger with Skydance, with David Ellison identifying “Top Gun 3” as a priority. Cruise has also reflected on the long creative journey, noting in past remarks that it took him 35 years to fully realize the vision for “Top Gun: Maverick,” and that discussions continue around potential story directions. While plot details remain under wraps, the confirmation marks a significant moment for one of Hollywood’s most enduring action franchises, with fans anticipating the next chapter in Maverick’s high-flying legacy.
