Construction is underway on a new mosque in Touba, Senegal, a city deeply significant as the spiritual center of the Mouride movement [[1]]. Replacing an existing structure, the project represents a substantial investment – estimated in the hundreds of millions of Francs CFA – and reflects the community’s dedication to a modernizing their central place of worship [[2]]. Driven by local leadership and fueled by volunteer efforts, the construction is not only building a mosque, but also strengthening social bonds within the city [[3]].

Construction of a new mosque in Touba is progressing with the installation of flooring, a key step in the project, officials say. The ambitious undertaking is being driven by a strong sense of community and a desire to create a modern place of worship.

Local youth have been instrumental in the construction, consistently volunteering their time and effort since work began. “Since the first shovelful of earth was turned, the youth of Touba have been committed to accelerating the work. Their dedication is admirable,” said Imam El Hadj Anlyou Fadiga, the central imam.

The project originated with Mayor Moussa Sanogo, who identified the need for a new structure. According to the imam, Sanogo “took the time to observe and diagnose the condition of the mosque. And immediately, he made a firm decision to demolish the old structure and erect a new, more modern one in its place.”

The total cost of the construction is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of Francs CFA, reflecting the scale of the spiritual and community project. The financial commitment underscores the importance of the mosque to the people of Touba.

Beyond its architectural significance, the new mosque is already fostering social cohesion within the community. The enthusiastic participation of young people, support from local authorities, and widespread religious fervor demonstrate a shared commitment to providing a dignified, modern, and lasting place of worship for all. This project highlights the power of community-led initiatives to address local needs.
