Trump Fires Back at Scholz Over ‘Humiliation’ Remark

Former U.S. President Donald Trump launched a sharp rebuke of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on April 28, warning that the world would be held “hostage” if Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons. The strongly worded response came after Merz criticized the United States’ approach to conflict in the Middle East.

Through his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump directly named Merz, condemning the German leader for suggesting that an Iranian nuclear weapon would be acceptable. “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” Trump stated. He emphasized the precarious global situation, asserting that a nuclear-armed Iran would create a crisis of global security and extortion. Trump also maintained that his administration was taking action that “other countries or presidents should have taken years ago.”

The exchange began after Merz, during a school event in Marsberg on April 27, stated that Iran’s leadership was “humiliating” the United States, accusing U.S. Officials of repeatedly entering negotiations only to “return empty-handed.” “The entire country is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially the so-called Revolutionary Guard,” Merz said, questioning the lack of a clear path to end the conflict from Washington.

In response to the criticism, Trump’s administration signaled a more hardline stance toward Tehran, rejecting any proposals that could delay addressing Iran’s nuclear program. Any agreement, officials said, must fundamentally focus on “preventing its ability to obtain nuclear weapons.”

The back-and-forth follows Trump’s recent cancellation of a planned trip to Islamabad, Pakistan, over the weekend, citing “internal chaos and fighting” within the country’s leadership as hindering productive negotiations. Trump stated that if Iranian or related parties were sincere about dialogue, “all they have to do is pick up the phone,” reiterating his refusal to engage in unproductive indirect talks and demanding direct contact with Iranian officials.

The escalating rhetoric underscores growing tensions in the region as international efforts to contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions continue. The development could influence future diplomatic talks and the broader geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
