The United States is planning a major expansion of its naval fleet, including a new class of battleships, President Donald Trump announced Monday. The move signals a renewed focus on military strength as geopolitical competition intensifies globally.

Trump, speaking alongside Defense Minister Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan, described the initiative as a “Golden Fleet,” echoing a similar moniker he has given to a planned missile defense system, dubbed the “Golden Dome.”

The planned fleet will include larger warships equipped with long-range missile systems, as well as a significant number of new frigates, some of which have already been ordered.

“It starts with two ships, but will develop to ten and eventually to 20-25,” Trump said, adding that the expansion will also bolster the nation’s aircraft carrier fleet.

“We are building three large aircraft carriers,” he stated.

According to the President, the new class of battleships will be “bigger, faster, and 100 times more powerful” than any existing U.S. warship. The announcement comes as the U.S. seeks to maintain its naval dominance in key strategic regions.

Trump indicated he will meet with key suppliers next week to discuss a timeline for construction, expressing frustration with the current pace.

“It’s going too slowly,” the President said.
