Philippines Volcano Agency Urges Calm Amidst Frequent Natural Disasters
The Philippines’ volcanic agency today urged citizens not to give in to fear as the nation continues to experience a high frequency of earthquakes, volcanic activity, and typhoons.
During a press conference on 2025-10-10, Dr. Teresito Bacolol of the Philippines Volcanic agency acknowledged “disaster fatigue” among Filipinos, but stressed the importance of preparedness. “We understand that Filipinos are now experiencing disaster fatigues from typhoons, volcanic minor eruptions and earthquakes. We asked them not to feel fearful,” he said. “We have to prepare ourselves. We have to accept our reality that the Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire – that every now and then we will be jolted by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. Instead of panicking, we have to prepare.”
The Philippines is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of intense seismic and volcanic activity caused by the movement of tectonic plates. This geological reality means the country is particularly susceptible to natural disasters, and recent events have heightened public concern. Understanding the risks associated with living in this region is crucial for effective disaster management, as detailed by the United States Geological Survey.
The agency’s statement comes as the nation grapples with the ongoing impacts of recent typhoons and minor volcanic eruptions; a major eruption or earthquake could have devastating consequences for the archipelago. Officials emphasized the need for continued monitoring and proactive measures, referencing resources available through the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
The agency will continue to monitor seismic activity and provide updates to the public, urging communities to remain vigilant and prepared.
