Earthquakes Rock Northwest Turkey, Ongoing Recovery Efforts in Balıkesir

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s Balıkesir province on Friday, December 12, 2025, according to reports from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). The quake, centered in the Sındırgı district, prompted a response from emergency services and raised concerns about ongoing recovery efforts in the region.

The earthquake occurred in a rural area of Sındırgı, and initial reports indicate no immediate casualties. However, the event underscores the seismic activity in the region and the vulnerability of structures still recovering from previous earthquakes. The quake serves as a reminder of Turkey’s location in a highly active seismic zone.

Recovery and rebuilding efforts are already underway in Sındırgı following earlier damage. Demolition of damaged buildings is complete in some areas, with cleanup operations now in progress, Kars Manşet reports. Construction of new earthquake-resistant homes in the district’s rural neighborhoods is also continuing.

Elsewhere in Turkey, a fire broke out on the ground floor of a two-story building in Pendik, Istanbul, causing significant damage. Hürriyet published images showing the extent of the blaze.

The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and AFAD are continuing to monitor seismic activity across Turkey, providing updates on any new tremors. Habertürk is providing the latest information on earthquake activity.

Anadolu Agency reports that construction of earthquake-resistant housing continues in Sındırgı.

Euronews also reported on the 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Balıkesir’s Sındırgı district.
