Alison Mendes Shares Emotional Reflection on Motherhood After Adopting Daughter Mila

Chilean actress and comedian Alison Mendes opened up about the complex emotions she experienced following the adoption of her daughter Mila, revealing a deeply personal struggle that many parents face but rarely discuss.

In a heartfelt social media post shared on April 21, 2026, Mendes reflected on the “luto” — or grief — that comes with welcoming a second child when your firstborn is no longer the sole focus of your attention.

“There’s something nobody talks much about — the ‘grief’ of having another child and watching your baby stop being your baby and develop into an older sibling,” she wrote, addressing her eldest son, Baltazar, who is six years old.

Mendes described how the shift in family dynamics has been the most challenging part of this new chapter of motherhood.

“For me, this has been the hardest part of this new motherhood,” she said, explaining how time now feels divided between her children.

She recalled moments when she noticed Baltazar looking at her with sad, honey-colored eyes while she lavished affection on Mila, whom she described as a “wonderful girl with huge eyes and a permanent smile.”

The comedian shared that she had spoken about these feelings with close friends, many of whom reassured her that such emotions are normal.

“‘It’s normal,’ they told me while I was crying from guilt… they shared that they too had cried the night before giving birth and talked to their older children,” she recalled.

Mendes also remembered a poignant moment from her own childhood, when her mother confessed she had once worried she wouldn’t love Mendes as much as her sister — and had cried after Mendes was born, feeling guilty for loving her so deeply.

Although Mendes and her partner, comedian Pedro Ruminot, had explained the adoption process to Baltazar in the best way they could, she acknowledged that understanding and accepting such a change isn’t always easy for a young child.

“Even though we explained the adoption process as clearly as we could, it’s not simple to grasp or explain like a pregnancy,” she noted.

The post, accompanied by a video of Mendes and Baltazar riding a bicycle together, resonated widely with followers who praised her honesty about the emotional complexities of expanding a family through adoption.
