Turkey’s presidential palace in Ankara, Beştepe, is slated to receive a €600 million budget in 2026, sparking debate over government spending priorities. The allocation, revealed during Turkish Grand National Assembly budget discussions, is significantly higher than the budgets for the presidential residences of key European counterparts like France and Germany. Opposition lawmakers are questioning the substantial financial commitment to the sprawling complex, which is reportedly the largest active presidential palace in the world with approximately 1,000,000 square meters of space.

Turkey’s presidential palace, known as Beştepe, is budgeted to cost approximately 600 million Euros in 2026, a figure that significantly exceeds the allocations for the presidential residences of several comparable European nations, according to data presented to the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

The comparison, highlighted by İyi Party İzmir MP Hüsmen Kırkpınar during budget discussions, reveals that Beştepe’s projected cost dwarfs the budgets for France’s Élysée Palace, allocated 60 million Euros, and Germany’s Bellevue Palace, which has a budget of 126 million Euros. Italy’s Quirinal Palace, the official residence of President Mattarella, is budgeted at 224 million Euros – also less than the Turkish presidential complex.

The substantial difference in funding comes as Turkey allocates 600 million Euros to Beştepe out of a total 2026 national budget of 450 billion Euros. In contrast, Germany’s 444.9 billion Euro budget includes 126 million Euros for the presidential office, while France designates 60 million Euros within its 500 billion Euro budget, and Italy allocates 224 million Euros from a 750 billion Euro national fund.

One of the World’s Largest Presidential Residences

“In two of the largest members of the European Union, Germany and France, the budgets allocated to the presidency are much lower than in Turkey,” Kırkpınar stated.

According to information provided by Chat GPT, Beştepe is the largest active presidential palace complex in the world, covering approximately 1,000,000 square meters. The complex is comprised of multiple buildings, unlike many other presidential residences.

The ranking of the largest republican-era presidential palaces globally, as compiled by Chat GPT, is as follows:

1-Turkey – Presidential Complex (Beştepe): Total area: ~ 1,000,000 square meters. A complex of buildings, making it the largest presidential residence in the world.

2-Kazakhstan – Ak Orda Palace (Astana) Indoor area: ~ 36,700 square meters. One of the largest single-building presidential palaces.

3-South Korea – Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae, Seoul) Area: ~ 250,000 square meters. The complex contains multiple structures.

4-Russia – Kremlin (Moscow) Area: ~ 275,000 square meters. The administrative complex also houses historical buildings.
