Canadian citizen was among those killed in the incident, Reuters reported, citing Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said her government is in contact with the Canadian embassy.
According to the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, three attackers climbed one of the pyramids and opened fire, prompting visitors to flee in panic. Some fell from the structure while trying to escape, contributing to the injuries.
Video shared on social media showed a woman screaming for police amid gunfire, while another clip appeared to depict a suspect walking along the pyramid’s edge with victims lying nearby.
President Sheinbaum stated that federal interior and culture ministry personnel were dispatched to the scene, and the national security council had been tasked with leading the investigation.
The shooting occurred in the northeastern outskirts of Mexico City, at one of the country’s most visited historic sites, drawing international attention due to the presence of foreign tourists.
