U.S. Officials Meet With Ukrainian Delegation in Florida to Discuss Path to Peace
Hallandale Beach, FL – A delegation of U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, met with Ukrainian security officials in Florida this weekend to discuss a potential framework for ending the ongoing conflict. The talks center around a U.S.-proposed plan aimed at securing Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, according to reports.
Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said he anticipates “productive” discussions with the American group, which also includes Donald Trump emissary Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the former president’s son-in-law. The meeting took place at the Shell Bay Club, a golf and racquet club created by Witkoff in Hallandale Beach. This meeting underscores the continued U.S. engagement in seeking a resolution to the conflict.
Prior to the meeting, Umerov stated he was “in constant contact” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “We have clear directives and priorities: to preserve Ukrainian interests, ensure constructive dialogue, and make progress based on the advances made in Geneva,” he said. “The United States hears us. The United States supports us. The United States works alongside us,” Umerov added.
Secretary Rubio stated the bilateral discussions are focused on “putting an end to a war in a way that creates a mechanism and a path forward that will allow them to be independent and sovereign, to never know war again, and to create extraordinary prosperity for their people.”
Negotiations are expected to resume Sunday, building on amendments to the American plan that were discussed last week in Geneva between U.S., Ukrainian, and European representatives. Zelenskyy has indicated the U.S. initially presented a 28-point proposal intended to end the conflict. The plan, which was reportedly seen as favoring Moscow, was revised in Geneva and requires final approval from all parties involved, though Kyiv has expressed concerns about potentially significant concessions.
