Ukraine will not cede the Donbas region to Russia under any circumstances as part of a potential peace agreement, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing the need for compromise in ongoing negotiations. The firm stance comes following talks held in Abu Dhabi.
“My position regarding our territories remains unchanged,” Zelenskyy said, according to Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.
The Ukrainian president also announced that a document outlining security guarantees from the United States is finalized and ready for signature. This development signals a potential turning point in securing long-term support for Ukraine as it continues to defend against Russian aggression.
“Specific security guarantees for Ukraine provide specific dates for the end of this war. (…)
The document is 100 percent ready. We are awaiting a signal from our partners regarding the date and location for its signing.
It will then be submitted for ratification to the U.S. Congress and the Ukrainian parliament,” Zelenskyy explained.
This week’s trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia in the United Arab Emirates centered on the future of the Donbas region, according to reports.
Moscow is demanding the transfer of the remaining parts of the Donetsk region currently under Ukrainian control as a key condition for ending the war, and this remains the primary obstacle to reaching an agreement. The Kremlin is reportedly pushing what is known as the “Anchorage formula,” which envisions full Russian control of the Donbas and a frozen conflict line in other areas.
While some progress was reportedly made on military matters during the negotiations, significant disagreements persist regarding territorial issues and a political settlement. The lack of movement on territorial concessions underscores the deep divisions that continue to hamper peace efforts.
