A school employee in Umeå, Sweden, has been re-arrested in connection with a growing investigation into allegations of child pornography and sexual offenses, authorities announced Thursday. The case, which initially focused on incidents within the past year, now spans a period of more than eight years.
The man is now suspected of 15 counts of sexually abusing children and 15 counts of possessing child pornography between May 25, 2017, and May 12, 2025. The re-arrest underscores the broadening scope of the investigation and the potential for additional charges.
“After continued extraction of data from the man’s storage devices and review of the material found, I can confirm that there are several victims who were photographed by the suspect,” said Public Prosecutor Jennifer Piironen. “The photography largely took place during work hours in changing rooms and shower areas.”
Some Charges Dropped Due to Statute of Limitations
Authorities have dropped a previous charge of invasive photography due to uncertainty surrounding the statute of limitations, as the expanded timeframe of the alleged crimes raises questions about which offenses may have expired.
Piironen added that the images appear to have been taken without the knowledge of the victims, and evidence suggests all of the individuals photographed were students or former students of the suspect. Police are working to identify the victims and contact their guardians.
The investigation began in November of last year, and the school employee was initially suspended from his position. The case has caused significant concern among parents in the community, who fear their children may be among those depicted in the images.
