A viral video depicting a tense encounter between French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron has returned to the spotlight following the release of a new book that challenges the official narrative provided by the Elysée Palace.

The incident, which first gained global attention on May 25, 2025, took place as the presidential couple arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, to begin an Asian tour. Footage captured at the moment the presidential Airbus door opened showed Brigitte Macron appearing to slap the head of state, sparking immediate international speculation.

At the time, the Elysée Palace worked to minimize the event, suggesting the clips were “taken out of context” and describing the interaction as a “moment of complicity.” President Macron himself dismissed the notion of a marital conflict, stating, “We were joking with my spouse as we often do,” and expressing surprise that the brief interaction could evolve into a “planetary catastrophe.”

However, in the new book “Un couple (presque) parfait,” journalist Florian Tardif presents a starkly different account. Tardif, who has followed the presidential couple since 2017, asserts that the scene was far from a joke, describing it instead as a “real couple’s scene” resulting from a “quite significant dispute.”

According to the claims detailed in the book, the argument was triggered after Brigitte Macron discovered a message from a well-known personality—Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani. The publication describes a “platonic” relationship that lasted “a few months” between the President and the actress.

The resurfacing of these allegations has once again fueled speculations of jealousy and private turmoil within the marriage. This development underscores the persistent public fascination and intense scrutiny surrounding the private lives of the French leadership.

The entourage of the First Lady has since issued a denial regarding the claims that the actress was the catalyst for the dispute. Further details regarding the alleged platonic connection and the subsequent confrontation remain a point of contention between the author’s findings and the official palace line.
