US House Rejects Trump’s Tariffs on Canadian Goods

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to reject tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Canadian goods, in a rare move challenging his economic policy.

The resolution – brought forward by Democrats – passed with a vote of 219 to 211, including support from six Republicans.

The measure would complete Trump’s use of a national emergency declaration to justify the trade measures against Canada.

Symbolic Importance

The vote carries symbolic weight given the narrow Republican majority in the House, currently holding 218 seats to the Democrats’ 214.

The resolution is expected to pass the Senate, which has twice voted to prevent Trump from imposing tariffs on Canada, despite Republican control. This development could further complicate the administration’s trade policies.

However, the measure is unlikely to become law, as it would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override a likely veto from Trump.

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has escalated his trade policy of broad tariffs, targeting traditional U.S. Partners including Canada, as part of an approach he describes as “rebalancing trade” and boosting domestic manufacturing.

The U.S. Administration has imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, citing a national emergency, a move that has strained relations between Washington and Ottawa, which are linked by the North American trade agreement, an agreement Trump is considering withdrawing from.

The U.S. President has increased pressure on Canada, threatening to impose tariffs of up to 100% on Canadian goods if Ottawa enters into a trade agreement with China, raising tariffs on Canadian aircraft to 50% unless deals are secured for “Gulfstream” planes, and refusing to allow the opening of a new bridge connecting Ontario to Michigan.
