Madrid-A late deflection proved costly for Rayo Vallecano as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia in a tightly contested La Liga match Monday evening. The result does little to alleviate relegation concerns for either side, though it shifts Rayo slightly further from the drop. With the mid-table increasingly congested, every point is crucial as the Spanish top flight heads toward the latter half of the season.

MADRID — A deflected shot secured a 1-1 draw for Valencia against Rayo Vallecano in Monday’s La Liga action.

Rayo Vallecano entered the match just above the relegation zone and finished the night in a slightly improved position, gaining a point and climbing one spot in the standings thanks to a second-half goal from Diego López.

López’s strike through a crowded penalty area appeared to take a deflection off Nobel Mendy, wrong-footing Rayo’s goalkeeper, Augusto Batalla.

The moment proved unlucky for Mendy, who had been one of the home side’s standout performers in the first half.

The Senegalese defender had given Rayo the lead in the 37th minute, powerfully heading home a well-worked corner routine.

Rayo largely controlled the flow of play but couldn’t convert their dominance into a larger advantage on the scoreboard. The draw lifted them to ninth place, one point ahead of a cluster of four other teams vying for position in the middle of the table.

Valencia sits in 15th, but just six points separate them from Rayo in ninth and Girona in 18th, highlighting the tight competition in the league.
