Venezuelan authorities recently concluded a series of raids in Amazonas state targeting illegal mining operations and logistical support networks, resulting in teh arrest of two Colombian women as reported by Diario Primicia. The operations, conducted under “Operation Neblina 2025,” underscore a growing government effort to curb unauthorized resource extraction within the vulnerable Amazon rainforest. Officials destroyed significant amounts of mining equipment and fuel at two camps discovered near the Carida indigenous community, highlighting the environmental damage caused by illicit mining activities. This crackdown reflects broader concerns about increasing illegal mining-including for rare earth minerals-and its impact on the region’s ecosystem and local communities [[1]].
Venezuelan authorities have arrested two Colombian women and dismantled illegal mining operations in the Amazon rainforest, part of a broader crackdown on unauthorized resource extraction. The operations were causing significant environmental damage, officials said.
The arrests took place in the Atabapo municipality of Amazonas state, according to a statement released by Strategic Operational Commander GJ. Domingo Hernández Lárez. The two women, ages 36 and 18, were operating a logistical camp used to support the illicit mining activity.
Authorities destroyed equipment found at the first camp, including three 1,200 horsepower generators, four anime processing facilities, 130 liters of gasoline, a 1,200 amp battery, a “catumare” (a type of local boat), a freezer, five liters of 20W-50 oil, and two suruca-type mining sluices.
A second camp was discovered nearby, hidden in dense jungle foliage close to the Carida indigenous community. At that location, officials destroyed 400 liters of gasoline, 50 four-inch PVC pipes, 1,200 meters of high-pressure 4-inch hose, eight tarps used for sifting, and a mining hydrojet.
All materials were destroyed on site in accordance with Venezuela’s environmental criminal law. The operations are part of “Operation Neblina 2025,” a government initiative targeting illegal mining.
