VW ID.4 Fails in US Market Due to Low Interest

Volkswagen is ending production of its ID.4 electric crossover SUV in the United States, with assembly at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant set to cease in mid-April 2026.

The decision, announced on April 9, 2026, reflects shifting market dynamics in the U.S. Electric vehicle sector, where overall EV sales accounted for 9.6% of total auto sales in 2025 according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.

Volkswagen cited ongoing challenges in the EV market as the reason for the move, stating that “the EV market continues to challenge the industry, requiring measured decisions throughout the last few years to navigate this unpredictability.”

The automaker will redirect the Chattanooga facility toward higher-volume models, beginning with the second-generation Atlas, which has been produced at the plant since 2017 for the 2018 model year.

Despite ending production, Volkswagen confirmed that Model Year 2026 ID.4 vehicles already built will remain available to U.S. Customers through existing inventory, which is expected to support demand into 2027.

The company also noted that a future version of the ID.4 is planned for the North American market, though no timeline or further details were provided.

This development aligns with broader industry trends, as other automakers including Ford, Honda, and Lamborghini have similarly scaled back electric vehicle initiatives amid fluctuating consumer demand and reduced federal support.

Volkswagen Group of America President and CEO Kjell Gruner emphasized the strategic importance of the Chattanooga plant, stating that “the Chattanooga plant has been, and will continue to be, a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s strategy in the United States,” and that the shift underscores the company’s commitment to the facility’s workforce and long-term success.
