Latvia faces the prospect of another extreme heat event, with meteorologists warning that temperatures could climb to record-breaking levels in the coming days.
The national weather service has indicated that air temperatures may reach new highs, potentially surpassing previous benchmarks set during the summer of 2014.
According to historical data, the current national heat record stands at +37.8°C, recorded in Ventspils on August 4, 2014, after an initial reading of +36.6°C the previous day.
That 2014 mark surpassed a long-standing record from 1943, when Daugavpils registered +36.4°C, which had remained unchallenged for 71 years.
Coastal areas also experienced exceptional heat during that period, with Pāvilosta reaching +35.9°C and Liepāja recording +35.6°C.
Officials emphasize that such prolonged high temperatures pose significant risks to public health, infrastructure, and energy demand, particularly as climate patterns continue to shift across the Baltic region.
