WhatsApp is preparing to launch a paid premium tier called WhatsApp Plus, according to recent reports from WABetaInfo and confirmed by heise online. The subscription model is currently being tested with a limited group of Android users, offering enhanced customization options beyond the free version.

Premium features include the ability to pin up to 20 chats—compared to the current limit of three—and apply custom message tones across entire chat lists. Users will also gain access to 18 color options for app theming and 14 different designs for the WhatsApp app icon. Exclusive stickers and ringtones will further personalize the experience for paying subscribers.

In Europe, the WhatsApp Plus subscription is expected to cost 2.49 euros per month. Management of the subscription will be handled through WhatsApp’s settings menu under “Settings” > “Subscriptions” > “WhatsApp Plus.” The paid tier will remain optional, with WhatsApp emphasizing that core functionality—such as messaging, voice and video calls and privacy controls—will continue to be free for all users.

At this stage, WhatsApp Plus is only available for the standard WhatsApp Messenger app, with no support planned for WhatsApp Business during the initial rollout. An iOS version of the premium subscription is reportedly in development for a future release.

The move reflects Meta’s broader strategy to monetize its messaging platforms while maintaining accessibility. By offering optional premium upgrades, WhatsApp aims to generate additional revenue without compromising the free experience that serves billions of users worldwide.
