Paying Cash for Prescriptions May Be Cheaper Than Using Insurance

Consumers may find significant savings on prescription drugs by paying the out-of-pocket price rather than utilizing their insurance copay, according to recent findings.

Experts have discovered that discount programs, often free to use, negotiate lower prices with pharmacies, potentially offering substantial savings to consumers. These programs include America’s Pharmacy, BlinkHealth, GoodRx, SingleCare, and WellRx. “We found sometimes it’s cheaper to pay for prescription drugs out of pocket, rather than the copay with your insurance plan,” said Kevin Brasler, executive editor at Washington Consumers’ Checkbook. The discounts apply to both online and major chain pharmacies.

The process involves visiting a drug discount website, entering the medication details and ZIP code, and then receiving a coupon to present at the pharmacy. This allows consumers to compare prices and potentially bypass higher insurance costs. However, it’s important to note that purchases made using these discounts will not count toward annual insurance deductibles. While these programs offer potential savings, consumers should review the company’s privacy policy to understand data collection practices, as they are not covered by HIPAA like traditional insurance claims. “A lot of the companies say, ‘Hey, we won’t share your personal information with other companies,’ but you may be in a situation where they’re sharing enough information about you for targeted advertising,” Brasler cautioned. Rising prescription drug costs have been a major concern for Americans in recent years, making these alternative options increasingly relevant.

Officials recommend consumers carefully weigh the benefits of discount programs against the protections offered by their health insurance plans.
