Wilmington Wildcats Remain in Conference Title Hunt with Comeback Volleyball Victory Over Streator

The Wilmington Wildcats secured a hard-fought 25-15, 26-24 victory over the Streator Bulldog Spikers yesterday at Pops Dale Gymnasium in Streator, Illinois, keeping their hopes alive for the Illinois Central Eight Conference championship.

After a dominant first set, Wilmington faced a strong challenge in the second, falling behind 18-11 due to a series of Streator aces and strong plays. However, the Wildcats rallied, ultimately winning the set 26-24 after a Streator center-line violation. Senior setter/right-side hitter Molly Southall emphasized the team’s resilience, stating, “I feel like we got down really quick [in the second set]. But one thing about us is, I feel we always finish strong.” Wilmington played without key hitter Rachel Smith, with Southall leading the team with four kills, three blocks, and eight digs, supported by Sami Liaromatis’ match-high 21 digs.

Streator, led by all-stater Aubrey Jacobs’ six kills, put up a formidable fight, but ultimately couldn’t maintain their momentum. Coach Julie Gabehart noted a recurring issue for her team, saying, “It’s kind of been our nemesis the last few weeks. We just have to learn how to finish sets and matches.” This loss impacts Streator’s chances of securing a top-three finish in the conference. Wilmington’s victory improves their overall record to 22-3 and their conference record to 11-1. Coach Kelly Van Duyne highlighted the importance of teamwork in their comeback, stating, “I thought the biggest thing was we weren’t playing as a team the first half of the second game.” The Wildcats will continue their pursuit of the conference title with upcoming matches, while Streator will focus on addressing their consistency issues as they navigate the remainder of the season.
