Wout van Aert Conquers Paris-Roubaix in Epic Sprint Finish
In a historic showdown on Sunday, April 13, 2026, Wout van Aert finally captured the elusive Paris-Roubaix title, outsprinting Tadej Pogačar in the velodrome to secure the biggest victory of his career. The win marks van Aert’s second Monument title, joining his 2020 Milan-San Remo victory, and ends years of heartbreak for the Visma-Lease a Bike star.

The race, described as the fastest ever edition of the “Hell of the North,” saw van Aert and UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s Pogačar break away from the favorites with just over 50km remaining. Despite Pogačar’s attempts to shake the Belgian rider and avoid a head-to-head sprint, van Aert remained glued to his wheel. In the final laps of the velodrome, van Aert surged past the world champion to claim the win. Jasper Stuyven of Soudal Quick-Step rounded out the podium in third place.
The victory was a momentous occasion for van Aert’s hometown of Herentals, where local cafés celebrated their hero finally conquering the cobbles. Following the grueling race, the Belgian rider celebrated his achievement in a uniquely Flemish fashion, enjoying a meal of fries provided by Joke and Margo.
For Tadej Pogačar, the result was a second consecutive second-place finish at Roubaix. The defeat means Pogačar still needs a victory at this specific race to complete the prestigious set of five Monuments. Meanwhile, other protagonists of the race, including Mathieu van der Poel, faced a more somber aftermath, with van der Poel reportedly spending time on a golf course to process the disappointment.
This triumph cements van Aert’s status as one of the most versatile riders in the sport, adding a legendary Classic victory to a resume that already includes three consecutive UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships (2016, 2017, 2018) and multiple stage wins across the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España.
