Strong Winds Expected

A yellow alert has been issued for parts of Eastern Norway as a significant winter storm approaches, bringing the potential for heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions. The warning, which began Friday morning, extends through 1:00 PM Saturday.

According to Yr.no, lower elevations of Telemark could see between 10 and 25 centimeters of new snow. The combination of snowfall and wind is expected to create reduced visibility and difficult driving conditions, particularly west of the Oslofjord.

“The combination of snow and wind gives snow squalls and challenging driving conditions, so be aware if you are going to be out in traffic,” Yr.no stated on its website.

In addition to the snowfall, strong winds are anticipated. Coastal areas of Telemark and Vestfold may experience wind gusts up to 10–12 meters per second from the northeast, further exacerbating the risk of whiteout conditions.

“Wind speeds are expected to be around 5–6 meters per second from the northeast, with gusts up to 10–12 meters per second,” Yr.no reports.

A yellow alert is the lowest of three levels for weather warnings (yellow, orange, red) and indicates a certain level of danger and the need for awareness and preparedness. The alert serves as a reminder for residents to take precautions and stay informed.

Following the clearing of the snow Saturday afternoon, conditions are expected to become calmer with continued cold temperatures. Temperatures are forecast to drop to between 10 and 14 degrees below zero Celsius over the weekend and into the beginning of next week.
