A power struggle is unfolding in the hungarian town of zebegény, where a disciplinary proceeding has been launched against Mayor Ernő Ervin Ferenczy by the local representative body. The dispute, which involves allegations ranging from conduct undermining public trust to illegal surveillance, has escalated to include a suspension of duties for Ferenczy and a physical lockout from his office. The situation reflects a broader trend of contested local governance playing out across the region, and follows prior clashes with the mayor over issues like cultural events.
A disciplinary proceeding has been launched against Ernő Ervin Ferenczy, the mayor of Zebegény, Hungary, after a vote by the town’s representative body. The move comes as local governance disputes gain attention across the region.
Ferenczy is contesting the legitimacy of the decision. He claims he adjourned the Thursday meeting as representatives attempted to bring the disciplinary action to a vote, and subsequently left the room, arguing that no further decisions could be made lawfully in his absence.

However, representatives asserted their authority to proceed, citing municipal law that allows for the exclusion of the mayor from proceedings concerning himself, and from both the discussion and decision-making regarding the disciplinary measures.
The specific allegations against Ferenczy have not been fully detailed, but include accusations of:
- Conduct undermining public trust,
- Irregular preparation of council meetings,
- Illegal video surveillance,
- Delays in implementing council resolutions,
- and unlawful termination of employment.

Acting without the mayor’s presence, the representatives also voted to suspend him from his duties, with Gábor Krebsz appointed as interim mayor.
“We locked the three doors of the office. Forcing them open is a criminal act,” officials stated.
Ferenczy, along with the town clerk, has initiated a legal review with the Pest County Government Office, seeking an independent investigation into the events and a restoration of lawful operations in Zebegény.
Ferenczy announced that he will continue to carry out his mayoral duties until a ruling is issued by a legal authority or court. He called on the representatives involved to cease obstructing the municipality’s work and requested the return of the office keys.
On Saturday morning, the lock and bolt were removed from the main entrance, reportedly because the entire lock had been replaced, and the mayor does not have a key to the new one.
The dispute follows previous controversy involving Ferenczy, who banned Halloween pumpkin carving in Zebegény, citing concerns about the potential negative impact on children’s psychological development. The case highlights the increasing tensions surrounding local governance and the exercise of mayoral authority.
