Community Rallies for 3-Year-Old with Rare Condition in Kansas City Parade

A community outpouring of support will culminate in a parade today for 3-year-old Tucker Langford, who is receiving at-home hospice care after being diagnosed with a rare skin disorder and a heart condition.

Tucker was born with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, often called “butterfly skin,” which causes extremely fragile skin. He was recently diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle becomes thin and weakened. Doctors determined they had exhausted treatment options, and Tucker returned home from Children’s Mercy Hospital earlier this week. His mother, Chandler Langford, explained, “He was in the hospital already for so long, and the minute that we got there, he was saying, ‘I want to go home. I miss my dogs, I miss my toys.’” The Langfords also have a 9-month-old son, Waylon.

Friends and family initially planned a small gathering, but the idea quickly grew through social media, with hundreds expected to participate in a parade featuring construction vehicles, jeeps, motorcycles, and more. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with staging starting at 9:45 a.m. in the northwest parking lot of Metro North Crossing at Barry Road and 169 Highway. This display of community solidarity highlights the growing trend of individuals leveraging social media to organize support for families facing medical challenges. Despite his health struggles, Chandler Langford says Tucker remains remarkably upbeat, often cracking jokes and trying to make those around him smile. “He’s so brave,” she said.

The Langford family has focused on making the most of their time together, embracing a motto they developed during Tucker’s hospital stay: “A happy heart makes a happy Tucker.” For more information about epidermolysis bullosa, visit the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation. The family also appreciates support and awareness for American Heart Association research.

Organizers anticipate between 300 and 500 vehicles will participate, and the Langford family is looking forward to a joyful event, hoping Tucker fully understands the outpouring of love and support.
