A cosmetic surgeon in Genoa, Italy is under investigation for allegedly causing unintentional harm to a patient, according to local reports. The physician performed both breast reduction and abdominal plastic surgery on a 68-year-old woman in 2022, but the patient subsequently experienced severe pain, bleeding, and pus discharge that persisted for years after the procedures.
The woman filed a complaint after experiencing these ongoing complications, and discovered the surgeon had a history of similar cases and a prior conviction, as well as a suspension from the medical registry. These types of cases highlight the importance of thoroughly vetting medical professionals before undergoing elective procedures.
The surgeries were carried out at a clinic in the Foce district of Genoa. The patient had been referred to the surgeon by a friend and was assured the procedures were feasible, agreeing to pay €10,000 in cash. Following the surgery, the woman noted a lack of drainage, a standard post-operative practice for invasive procedures.
Soon after, she began to suffer intense pain, but the surgeon reportedly reassured her that this was a normal part of the recovery process and that she would soon feel better. However, her condition worsened, eventually requiring her to replace her mattress due to bleeding from the surgical sites. She continues to experience chronic pain and visible scarring.
The woman then consulted a forensic doctor, who informed her of the surgeon’s previous cases and warned that the operation had put her life at risk. Determined to seek justice, she contacted a lawyer who requested the surgeon provide proof of professional liability insurance to cover potential damages. The surgeon allegedly did not respond to these requests.
In addition to the injuries sustained by the patient, the complaint filed with prosecutors requests a review of the clinic’s medical and insurance authorizations. Ensuring proper oversight of medical facilities is crucial for patient safety and quality of care.
