After nearly two decades, a new installment in the acclaimed Total War franchise is on the horizon. Creative Assembly, in partnership with Sega, announced today, December 5, 2025, that development is underway on Total War: Medieval 3. This marks the first direct sequel to 2006’s Medieval 2: Total War, and represents a significant moment for fans of the historical strategy genre.

The announcement, reported by GameSpot, comes with a commitment to increased transparency throughout the development process. Game Director Pawel Wojs explained in an official blog post that the team is intentionally sharing information at an early stage to foster a closer relationship with the player community. “Our goal is to communicate more often about what we’re doing and why,” Wojs stated. “This is a new way of communicating for us, but we’re excited to take you all along for the ride.” The team plans to provide updates roughly quarterly.

Wojs described Medieval 3 as “the ultimate ‘what if?’ game, allowing you to change the course of history.” He elaborated, “Our aim is to immerse players in the historical authenticity that the Total War series is known for. As you play, the world will respond to your decisions in a way that feels believable. You can choose to follow the historical record, or boldly rewrite it.” This focus on player agency and historical simulation is a hallmark of the series, and suggests a deep and engaging experience for strategy enthusiasts.

According to Wojs, Creative Assembly has been considering a Medieval 3 for “a long time,” with several previous attempts ultimately shelved. The project wasn’t feasible until now, thanks to the development of a more powerful new version of the Warcore engine and the assembly of a dedicated team with decades of experience in historical strategy game design. The improved engine will allow for greater complexity and realism in battles and campaign management.

Currently, the game is in “early pre-production,” a phase focused on defining the scope of the project, prioritizing features, and shaping the overall player experience. Wojs acknowledged that communicating so early in development may present challenges, and asked for patience as the team establishes a consistent communication rhythm.
