Leões batter Greeks 8-3
Sporting Lisbon secured their place in the Futsal Champions League quarterfinals with a dominant 8-3 victory over AEK Athens on Tuesday night. The Portuguese side, already holding a commanding lead from the first leg, continued their impressive form and set up a potential derby clash with Benfica in the next round, should Benfica overcome Araz.
Despite a comfortable 11-0 advantage from the first encounter, Sporting showed no signs of complacency. Bruno Pinto spearheaded the attack, delivering a hat trick and bringing his season tally to 21 goals. The performance underscored why Sporting went to great lengths to bring him back from Saudi Arabia.
Sporting flew out of the gates, with Bruno Pinto opening the scoring just 20 seconds into the match. He quickly added another, followed by a goal from Allan Guilherme to make it 3-0. However, a momentary lapse in concentration allowed AEK to respond through Ntatis (13’) and Vitinho (23’). Coach Nuno Dias rallied his team at halftime, and they emerged for a commanding second-half display. Tomás Paçó and Felipe Valério found the net, with Pauleta scoring twice to extend the lead before Felipinho grabbed a late consolation goal for the visitors.
The night also marked a special occasion for two Sporting stalwarts. Captain João Matos made his 800th appearance for the club, while Nuno Dias equaled Jesús Velasco’s record for most games coached in the Futsal Champions League with 80. This victory extends Sporting’s strong run in the competition and solidifies their position as a serious contender for the title.
