Leaders Express Hopeful Outlook

The election is being closely watched as a semi-final for the major political battles in the southern state. All major parties claim they are poised to maintain a lead in the voting. The opposition Congress party hopes public sentiment regarding a recent gold theft at the Sabarimala temple will work in their favor. Meanwhile, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is relying on a record of development projects and welfare pensions to secure support. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), attempting to gain further ground in the state, is campaigning strongly on sensitive religious issues, such as the management of the Sabarimala temple.
