Stan Wawrinka will add another prestigious tournament to his 2026 schedule, having been awarded a wild card into the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The ATP 500 clay-court event confirmed Thursday that the 40-year-old Swiss star will compete from April 13-19.
Wawrinka, a 16-time tour-level champion, boasts a 12-6 record in Barcelona throughout his career, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. He previously reached the semi-finals in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2008, and returned to the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 in 2025 after a 16-year absence.
The veteran player has also received a wild card to compete at the Gonet Geneva Open, scheduled for May 17-23. Wawrinka claimed his most recent ATP Tour title at the clay-court ATP 250 event in his home country in 2017.
Wawrinka will join a strong field in Barcelona, headlined by World No. 1 and two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz. Other top players confirmed to compete in Catalonia include Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Jack Draper, and Arthur Fils.
Wawrinka, who announced 2026 will be his final season on the ATP Tour, has already made an impact since making that announcement. Currently 6-8 for the year at Tour-level, he reached the third round of January’s Australian Open. He also recently broke back into the Top 100 on February 16, marking the first time he’s been ranked there since July 2024.
