Maryland and Virginia Lawmakers Condemn Federal Worker Layoffs Amid Government Shutdown

A group of Democratic lawmakers from Maryland and Virginia yesterday condemned the ongoing federal government shutdown and the resulting layoffs of federal employees, accusing the Trump administration of escalating the impact beyond previous closures.

Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland led a news conference Tuesday outside the Office of Management and Budget headquarters, where he and other representatives criticized Republicans and the White House. Van Hollen highlighted the significant number of federal workers residing in Maryland and Virginia, stating, “When Donald Trump shuts down the federal government, the Maryland and Virginia delegation come together and step up.” He praised federal employees for their vital roles, noting they “support our veterans, they help make sure our food and water is safe. They help develop treatments and cures to diseases that impact every American family, and the list goes on and on.”

Van Hollen further asserted that the administration’s actions represent a deliberate attack on the federal workforce. “Firing and threatening to fire federal employees is part of the Trump administration’s campaign to inflict trauma on our federal workforce,” he said, differentiating this shutdown from past instances where employees were furloughed rather than terminated. The administration disclosed Friday that seven agencies had begun issuing reduction-in-force notices to over 4,000 workers – a move that has intensified concerns about the long-term effects on government services and employee morale. Van Hollen called for an immediate end to what he described as attacks on federal employees and urged the administration to resume negotiations to reopen the government. The shutdown, now entering its [second week](https://www.headlineznews.com/politics/government-shutdown-enters-second-week/), is impacting numerous federal agencies and services, potentially delaying critical programs and economic activity.

Lawmakers urged the administration to “stop attacking federal employees, stop attacking the American people, and start negotiating to reopen the federal government.”
