Hamas Staged Recovery of Hostage Remains, Israel Claims

Israel accused Hamas today of staging the discovery of the remains of Ofir Tzarfati, a hostage recovered in December 2023, in a deceptive act intended to undermine the ongoing ceasefire agreement.

Israeli officials say Hamas operatives were filmed by a military drone digging a hole, placing Tzarfati’s remains inside, and then “uncovering” them in front of representatives from the Red Cross in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City yesterday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released the footage, alleging Hamas is falsely portraying efforts to locate the bodies of deceased hostages while deliberately withholding the remains of the 13 still held in Gaza, a violation of the US-backed ceasefire terms. “Contrary to Hamas’ claims of difficulties locating the bodies of the deceased hostages, yesterday Hamas operatives were documented removing body remains from a structure that had been prepared in advance and burying them nearby,” the IDF stated.

Tzarfati, 27, was kidnapped from the Nova music festival during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. His family, after viewing the video, expressed anguish, stating, “Once again, deception has been inflicted upon our family as we try to heal.” The Prime Minister’s Office called the incident a “clear violation of the agreement” and announced an emergency meeting led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss potential responses, including a possible shift in the dividing line within Gaza, as reported by The Times of Israel. This development further complicates already fragile negotiations for the release of remaining hostages.

Calls for a stronger Israeli response are mounting, with far-right ministers urging a return to full-scale war and the destruction of Hamas. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum demanded a meeting with Netanyahu, accusing Hamas of contempt and deception, and calling for decisive action. The ongoing delays in returning the bodies of deceased hostages are causing increasing distress and frustration among families and raising questions about the viability of the current ceasefire agreement, as detailed by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Netanyahu is expected to discuss potential responses with top defense officials this afternoon, with the possibility of altering the terms of the agreement under consideration.
