Nashville Wine Bar, Bad Idea, Wins MICHELIN Sommelier Award for Approachable Service

Nashville’s Bad Idea wine bar has been recognized with the MICHELIN Guide American South Sommelier Award, presented by Franciacorta, for its innovative and welcoming approach to wine service.

Owner Alex Burch received the award yesterday, November 3, 2025, for creating a space that intentionally breaks from traditional wine bar norms. Housed in a former church sanctuary, Bad Idea features a branding aesthetic reminiscent of a skate shop and a Lao-influenced food menu. Burch initially pursued sommelier training as a career advancement strategy while working at a steakhouse, and now aims to demystify wine for all patrons.

“I really appreciate having started my studies with virtually no prior recreational experience because it helps me connect with guests who are new to the world of wine,” Burch said. The wine menu itself is designed for accessibility, including a key to decode wine listing components and straightforward tasting notes, even offering playful opinions like, “No grape has been misunderstood more than poor, poor Chardonnay.” The bar’s focus on pairing wines with its flavorful Lao cuisine – particularly white wines with a touch of sweetness – has also garnered attention; a recent standout pairing featured a François Chidaine’s 2019 Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuffeaux with bánh cuốn, a scallop-stuffed crêpe. For those seeking more information on wine pairings, resources like Wine Folly can be helpful.

Bad Idea’s success highlights a growing trend in the hospitality industry towards inclusivity and education, making fine dining experiences more accessible to a wider audience. Burch emphasized that the bar is equally enjoyable for those simply seeking a glass of wine and a small plate, stating, “We’re trying to promote exploration and trying new things.” You can find more about the MICHELIN Guide here.

Burch and his team plan to continue refining the menu and wine list, focusing on unexpected pairings and fostering a comfortable environment for all wine enthusiasts.
