Trump Pushes to Have New Washington Commanders Stadium Named in His Honor

Former President Donald Trump is actively seeking to have the planned $3.7 billion Washington Commanders stadium named after him, leveraging both direct communication with team ownership and potential influence over government approvals for the project.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, Trump has communicated his desire directly to a member of Josh Harris’s ownership group. A senior White House official stated, “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen,” while White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added in an email, “That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible.” The Commanders are preparing for Trump’s visit to today’s home game against the Detroit Lions, where informal conversations regarding the stadium are anticipated.

The proposed stadium is slated to return to the RFK Stadium site – the team’s home from 1961 to 1996 – and open in 2030. While the Commanders control commercial sponsorship rights, naming the stadium after an individual requires approval from both the National Park Service, which controls the land, and the District of Columbia Council, which approved legislation for the stadium lease in September. This complex approval process gives Trump significant leverage, as he previously oversaw the federal agencies responsible for relevant approvals. The redevelopment of the 174-acre site represents the largest economic development effort in Washington’s history, and could significantly impact the city’s future.

Trump’s push for naming rights differs from typical stadium sponsorships; he seeks a tribute-style naming, akin to Soldier Field in Chicago or Lambeau Field in Green Bay. This follows a previous instance in July where Trump threatened to block the stadium project unless the team reinstated its former nickname, the Redskins, a request the Harris group has not pursued. Team officials say no formal talks have taken place yet, but anticipate further discussion during Trump’s visit.
