Aaron Rai Leads Abu Dhabi Championship Heading into Final Round
Aaron Rai carded a 6-under 66 today to take a one-stroke lead at the Abu Dhabi Championship, putting him in prime position to claim his first European tour title in five years.
The third round at Yas Links saw Rai reach 20-under par for the tournament, the penultimate event of the 2025 season. Nicolai Hojgaard and Tommy Fleetwood are tied for second, one stroke behind, while Nacho Elvira sits a further shot back. Fleetwood, a two-time winner of this event when it was held at Abu Dhabi Golf Club (in 2017 and 2018), has been in exceptional form recently, including a victory at the Tour Championship and a starring role in Europe’s Ryder Cup win.
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy made a strong push with six birdies in his first 11 holes, but his momentum faded as the wind increased, finishing with a 66 and landing at 14-under, six strokes off the lead. Rai’s most recent win came at the 2020 Scottish Open, and he also secured a PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship in August 2024. “This is one of the biggest events we have on the DP World Tour,” Rai said. “To win this week, to have a chance going into the weekend, is great. Still a long way to go and a lot of really good players.” A win here could significantly impact the final Race to Dubai standings.
Fleetwood praised Rai’s performance, stating, “He was unbelievable today in every department.” He also acknowledged his own good form, saying, “I’m playing very good golf at the moment, and I’ve found myself in this position a lot throughout the summer but never take it for granted.” You can find more information about the DP World Tour schedule on the official DP World Tour website and learn about the Yas Links course here.
The final round is set for tomorrow, where Rai will attempt to hold off a strong field and secure his long-awaited victory.
