Oman Streamlines E-Commerce Licensing to Boost Digital Economy
Oman has significantly simplified the process for entrepreneurs to launch online businesses, with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) actively encouraging all online sellers to secure official e-commerce licenses and verify their stores through the national “Maroof Oman” platform.
The initiative, currently being promoted through a new awareness campaign, is designed to differentiate legitimate businesses from fraudulent accounts on social media and ensure all online sales comply with legal standards. According to MoCIIP, entrepreneurs can now apply for and receive their e-commerce license entirely online via the Oman Business Platform. The process involves logging in, designating “e-commerce” as the business activity, completing the necessary details, and submitting the application for automatic approval.
Verification through the Maroof Oman website provides customers with added confidence and assurance, identifying businesses that are officially registered and compliant with Omani e-commerce regulations. This move comes as Oman experiences a surge in digital entrepreneurship, fueled by expanding payment systems, improved logistics, and growing consumer demand for online shopping – a trend expected to continue as the nation diversifies its economy beyond oil.
Authorities have cautioned that operating an e-commerce business without the required license could result in penalties under existing commercial regulations. Officials stated that the streamlined process will strengthen trust between businesses and consumers, enhance market transparency, and bolster confidence in Oman’s rapidly developing digital economy.
The Ministry anticipates a further increase in registered online businesses as a result of these changes and will continue to monitor compliance with the new regulations.
