Kosher Inspector Discovers Ancient Jewish Texts Studied in Rural China

A routine kosher inspection at a food production facility in Shandong province, China, revealed an unexpected connection to Jewish learning as a local factory representative was found to be an avid student of the Gemara.

Rabbi Shimon Freundlich, conducting inspections on behalf of several kosher certifying agencies, encountered the factory representative during a visit today. The representative, who had recently been assigned to oversee kosher certification, displayed a remarkable reverence for Jewish texts, sharing two Chinese-language books dedicated to the Talmud – Talmud Bavli and The Book of Wisdom, compiled by scholar Qiuquan and published by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Press. The discovery highlights the increasingly global reach of Jewish thought and tradition.

The representative shared a Midrash story about Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel and his attendant Tavi, illustrating the power of the tongue to create both good and harm. “From the tongue comes the good, and from the tongue comes the bad,” he recounted, emphasizing the story’s message. Freundlich noted the man’s passion for the material, stating the encounter fostered “a sudden, unexpected connection, one that transcended language, culture, and geography.” Understanding the complexities of the Gemara is central to Jewish law and tradition.

Freundlich, a Shliach (emissary) in China, regularly inspects factories producing kosher food for export to ensure compliance with halachic standards. The incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected places where Jewish wisdom can resonate. Officials stated they will continue to support kosher certification efforts in China and foster cultural exchange.
