Austrian skier Adam Kappacher begins his Olympic journey on Saturday, and the Salzburger knows that certain moments define an athlete’s career. He experienced just such a moment last year in France.

Adam Kappacher celebrated his first World Cup victory in Val Thorens, and the race was historic as two Skicross skiers finished tied for first place. “At first, I thought, ‘Yes, it was a decent day, a good race.’ But looking back, I would have been very annoyed if I had come in second,” Kappacher said, reflecting on the race.

Adam Kappacher begins his Olympic competition on Saturday, one day before the Winter Games conclude. The skier from Pongau understands that some moments are truly defining in an athlete’s life. Last year, he had one of those moments in France, making history with his first World Cup win.

Olympic Race Outlook Remains Open

Kappacher acknowledges he still has work to do this season to fully contend for the top spots in the world. “There are certain little mistakes I need to eliminate to be fully competitive at the front. The speed is definitely there, and I perceive good. I just need to have everything together, and then a lot of good things can happen,” he stated.

The Salzburger, who has two top-ten finishes this season, is looking forward to his third Olympic appearance after competing in 2018 (16th place) and 2022 (22nd place). “The course is in top condition, and the layout is really good. We’ve trained well and are prepared.”

Race Strategy Will Be Key

The Livigno Snow Park course offers limited overtaking opportunities, making strong starts even more crucial. Kappacher believes there’s only one strategy: “Get a good start and then be the first to finish. That would be the best. Over the years, you gain a lot of experience with things like that. But you gaze at a course and you know where you can carry more speed, or where there’s an opportunity to overtake in a curve.”

Led by Adam Kappacher and Lower Austria’s Johannes Aujesky, the Austrian Skicross team hopes to contend for a medal on the penultimate day of the Olympic Games in Italy. Christoph Danksagmüller, also from Salzburg, and Nicolas Lussnig will also be looking to make an impact in their Olympic debuts.
