In a landmark achievement for Antarctic aviation, an Airbus A330 – typically used for long-haul passenger routes – has successfully landed on teh continent’s interior ice shelf. The november 22nd flight, operated by Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly, represents the first time an aircraft of this size has touched down at an inland Antarctic base, perhaps revolutionizing logistical support and tourism access to the remote region. This pioneering landing at Union Glacier, a privately-owned camp, required significant aircraft modifications and a specially prepared ice runway, signaling a new era of accessibility for scientific research and exploration.

Airbus A330 Makes First-Ever Landing in Antarctica

An Airbus A330 aircraft has successfully touched down on the Antarctic ice, marking the first time this type of aircraft has landed at an inland Antarctic base. The flight, operated by Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly, landed on November 22, 2023, at Union Glacier, a privately-owned camp in Antarctica.

The A330, configured for passenger transport, completed the landing as part of a project aimed at opening up new possibilities for Antarctic tourism and scientific research. Hi Fly stated the operation involved specialized equipment and modifications to the aircraft to enable it to operate safely on the ice runway.

According to the company, the aircraft landed on a prepared 2,200-meter (7,218 feet) blue ice runway. The successful landing demonstrates the potential for larger aircraft to access the continent’s interior, potentially reducing reliance on smaller, less efficient planes for logistical support and passenger transport.

The A330’s arrival is expected to facilitate more comfortable and efficient travel for researchers and tourists visiting Antarctica, a region increasingly attracting attention for its unique scientific value and growing tourism sector. The flight was part of a collaboration with the White Desert company, which operates the Union Glacier camp.

Hi Fly has previously undertaken other pioneering aviation feats, including long-range flights with sustainable aviation fuel. This latest achievement further solidifies the company’s position as an innovator in the aviation industry.
