Alabama Launches New Department of Workforce to Boost Labor Participation
Montgomery, Alabama – Today, Governor Kay Ivey announced the establishment of the Alabama Department of Workforce (ADOW), a sweeping overhaul of the state’s workforce development efforts designed to address Alabama’s historically low labor participation rate.
The new department was unveiled during a ceremony on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol, attended by industry leaders, educators, and government officials. Governor Ivey stated the initiative aims to connect more Alabamians with employment opportunities, acknowledging barriers such as access to training, transportation, education, and childcare. “Many of our potential workers are sitting out the game… Alabama is launching a new recruitment plan of more accessible job training and employment services to put these sideline-sitters in the game,” she said.
Secretary Greg Reed, leading the ADOW, emphasized the department’s focus on removing obstacles and creating clear career pathways. “We’re not just fixing problems — we’re building Alabama’s competitive future,” Reed stated. The creation of ADOW consolidates various workforce programs under one umbrella, a move expected to streamline services and improve coordination between training and employer needs. Alabama’s economic growth has been hampered by a shortage of skilled workers, making this initiative crucial for future prosperity. Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, highlighted the alignment of workforce and economic development goals, noting that a strong workforce is “the foundation of every successful economic strategy.” AIDT, Alabama’s workforce development agency, will remain within the Department of Commerce as a key economic development resource; some related functions have moved to ADOW.
