Alyssa Thomas Downplays Comparisons to Diana Taurasi as Mercury Face Aces in WNBA Finals

Phoenix Mercury guard Alyssa Thomas emphasized her focus on forging her own legacy with the team, despite joining the franchise following the illustrious career of WNBA legend Diana Taurasi, as the Mercury trail the Las Vegas Aces 2-0 in the WNBA Finals.

Thomas, in her first season with Phoenix, helped the team reach its first Finals appearance since 2021 – a run previously led by Taurasi. While acknowledging Taurasi’s immense impact, Thomas stated, “I don’t think anybody can fill the shoes with Diana and what she’s done for this game, and let alone this franchise. For me, just to do half of what she does, it would be an honor for me. I just wanted to come in and be myself. I was ready for a new opportunity, and I knew it was time for a change. For me, it was just about coming in, being myself, and trying to win at the same level.”

Thomas has already made a significant impact, shattering several WNBA records this season. She tied the Mercury’s single-game assist record three times with 15 assists before ultimately achieving 16. Her dominance in playmaking is further highlighted by the fact that she has twice as many triple-doubles in the 2025 season as any other player has in their entire career, demonstrating her unique all-around skill set. Despite currently trailing the Las Vegas Aces 2-0, the Mercury will now host the next two games, offering a potential shift in momentum. The team is hoping to secure a fourth championship title, and Thomas’s continued performance will be crucial to their success. The WNBA Finals are a showcase of elite athleticism and strategic gameplay, attracting a growing fanbase and increased media attention to women’s basketball.

The Mercury will continue preparations for Game 3, with officials stating they remain confident in their ability to compete at a high level throughout the remainder of the series.
