PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Sunny and hot weather is expected on Friday, but big weather changes are headed to Arizona with a cold front in the forecast.
Look for a high of 101 degrees in the Valley today, which is well above normal for this time of year in Phoenix. The Valley saw a high of 102 degrees on Thursday. Cooler temperatures will arrive tomorrow with a cold front that also brings wind.
Winds are expected to pick up across the state today as an area of low pressure sweeps across the Great Basin to the north of Arizona. The Valley can expect southwesterly winds between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph, mainly in the late afternoon and evening hours.
Stronger winds are forecast in far western and northern Arizona, where a Wind Advisory that includes the Flagstaff area is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. Winds in that region are likely between 20 and 30 mph with gusts possible up to 45 mph.
Temperatures will drop starting tomorrow as a dry cold front pushes through Arizona during the morning hours. Saturday morning temperatures in the Valley will range from the low 60s to right around 70 degrees closer to downtown. Afternoon temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler than Friday with a forecast high of 91. Sunday brings a similar afternoon high, but morning temperatures should be slightly cooler, ranging from the upper 50s to mid 60s.
Dry weather is expected all weekend and through the middle of next week. There is a lot of uncertainty about the second half of next week, which could bring rainfall thanks to a decaying tropical system. We’ll keep you posted as we get closer and know more.
