Police Deploy to Arnhem Neighborhood Following Youth Disorder, Reports of Gunshots

Dutch police deployed to the Arnhem neighborhood of Presikhaaf on Monday evening, December 31, responding to reports of significant public disorder involving groups of young people. Authorities confirmed that evidence of gunfire, including bullet casings, was discovered at the scene.

The unrest began as disturbances at a local neighborhood celebration intended for children, according to reports from AD.nl. Witnesses described the situation as resembling a “war zone” due to the heavy use of fireworks.

The deployment of the riot police, known as the ME, followed escalating tensions and reports of property damage. Police have not yet released details regarding any arrests or injuries directly related to the disturbances in Arnhem. This incident underscores the challenges authorities face in maintaining public order during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, emergency services responded to a separate incident in Lichtenvoorde, where a person was seriously injured by fireworks. De Gelderlander reported that the ME was also dispatched to address unrest in Arnhem.

Authorities are continuing to investigate both incidents. De Telegraaf and Omroep Gelderland are providing live updates on the situation.

BN DeStem also reported that the ME was deployed in multiple cities across the Netherlands.
