Maccabi Tel Aviv Supporters Barred From Europa League Match in Birmingham
Supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv will not be permitted to attend their Europa League fixture against Aston Villa at Villa Park on November 6, due to safety concerns raised by local authorities.
West Midlands Police (WMP) advised the city’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) against approving an away fan allocation, citing concerns over potential protests and public safety outside the stadium. Villa confirmed the decision today, stating they are in “continuous dialogue with Maccabi Tel Aviv and the local authorities” with safety as the priority. The SAG, comprised of emergency services, the club, and other stakeholders, unanimously supported the recommendation, which is expected to be ratified by UEFA, the competition’s organizer.
The decision follows a recent history of unrest surrounding matches involving Maccabi Tel Aviv, including violent clashes and arrests during a game against Ajax in Amsterdam last November. Dutch police arrested 62 people following that match, with five requiring hospitalization. The current situation is further complicated by ongoing pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Birmingham, where approximately 30 percent of the population identifies as Muslim, according to a 2021 census. This decision highlights the increasing challenges faced by sporting events navigating geopolitical tensions.
While UEFA stated it “encourages both teams and the competent authorities to agree on the implementation of appropriate measures necessary to allow this to happen,” the organization ultimately defers to local authorities on safety and security matters. A Birmingham City Council spokesperson confirmed the “collective decision” to restrict away fan attendance, echoing the police’s concerns. Some officials, like Perry Barr MP Ayoub Khan, have called for the game to be cancelled or relocated, but with the match just 20 days away, logistical hurdles make that unlikely. Authorities stated they will continue to monitor the situation and work with all parties to ensure the safety of those attending the match and the wider community.
