Madrid, Spain – Arsenal and Atlético Madrid played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal on Wednesday, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of next week’s return leg in London.
Viktor Gyökeres gave Arsenal the lead just before halftime, converting a penalty awarded after Dávid Hancko fouled him inside the box. The spot-kick was confirmed by VAR.
Atlético Madrid responded in the second half through Julián Álvarez, who also scored from the penalty spot in the 56th minute. The penalty was awarded after a handball in the Arsenal area, again confirmed by video review.
The match featured significant VAR involvement, including a late penalty decision for Arsenal that was overturned. Referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded a penalty to Arsenal in the 81st minute after Hancko appeared to trip Eberechi Eze, but the call was reversed upon review, with officials determining Eze was already going to ground before contact was made.
The decision to overturn the penalty sparked controversy, with some questioning the consistency of the VAR application. According to reports, Arsenal’s Declan Rice has also been threatened with a UEFA sanction after claiming that Atlético Madrid supporters “provoked” the decision to disallow the penalty.
Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez also broke Lionel Messi’s record as the fastest South American to reach 25 Champions League goals in the process.
The first leg was a tighter, more tactical affair than Tuesday’s nine-goal thriller between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. Both sides had limited opportunities in the first half, and Arsenal staff had previously requested a UEFA inspection of the Metropolitano pitch over concerns about grass length, though the pitch was ultimately deemed playable.
A 1-1 draw feels like a fair result, with both teams knowing everything is on the line in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium next Tuesday. The outcome of the tie remains wide open, setting the stage for a compelling return fixture.
The winner of this semifinal will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on May 30.
