Wind Advisory Issued for Western Nevada as Storm Lingers
A wind advisory is in effect for much of Western Nevada until 9 p.m. today, October 26, 2025, as the tail end of an atmospheric river storm brings sustained high winds and potential travel disruptions.
The National Weather Service reports southwest winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected, with even higher gusts – potentially reaching 75 mph – in wind-prone areas along Highway 395 and Interstate 580 corridors, as well as foothill locations around Reno, Carson City, and Minden. Yesterday, a power outage in Minden and Gardnerville affected 822 customers for approximately four hours, temporarily closing businesses. A peak wind gust of 71 mph was recorded at 1 p.m. Saturday at the NV Energy gauge on Wild Oat Mountain above Topaz Lake.
Travel is already being impacted, with chain controls in effect over Mount Rose Summit and a prohibition of high-profile vehicles on Interstate 580 through Washoe Valley; conditions on other mountain passes are being monitored. According to National Weather Service Reno Meteorologist Heather Richards, “Sierra ridges are looking to achieve gusts of 100 mph, while western Nevada valley gusts could reach 50 plus mph.” These conditions can create hazardous conditions for drivers and aviation. You can find current road conditions at the Nevada Department of Transportation website.
Looking ahead, Nevada Day week is expected to be warmer and drier, with winds diminishing to around 25 mph over the Sierra ridges. Richards added that the long-range forecast indicates continued warmer and drier conditions through the end of October, potentially easing drought concerns in the region. Officials will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates as needed.
